In a move aimed at restoring order to India’s high-speed tolling lanes and reclaiming dignity for harassed toll plaza staff, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has tightened the screws on a growing menace — the infamous “loose FASTag,” fondly known in traffic circles as the “tag-in-hand” trick.

Despite FASTag’s near-heroic 98% penetration across Indian highways, some crafty drivers have found a new way to bypass seamless tech: by not actually sticking the tag to their windscreen.
